Last week, I dowloaded the first Jane’s Addiction show that I ever attended – May 1, 1989 at Montezuma Hall at SDSU. 1,000 people, SRO. Power went out prematurely, so Perry shouted “Jane Says” while Stephen played the congo drums. (The recording unfortunately missed that part.) I thought I had all the bootlegs…and then I found the one that meant the most.

I remembered hearing that the original JA lineup had played a gig or two around LA last year. I was curious to check out the setlists. Here’s what I found:

Jane’s Addiction setlist at La Cita 10/23/08:

1. up the beach
2. trip away
3. whores
4. 1%
5. ain’t no right
6. pigs in zen
7. ted, just admit it…
8. ocean size
9. had a dad
10. been caught stealing

Here’s the setlist for the follow-up show:

Jane’s Addiction setlist at El Cid 11/20/08:

1. Whores
2. Trip Away
3. Standing in the Shower… Thinking
4. Mountain Song
5. Ain’t No Right
6. No One’s Leaving
7. Then She Did…
8. 1%
9. Stop!
10. Had a Dad
11.Ocean Size
12. Chip Away

It arrived about 7:15 last night:

“Hey Jane’s Fans!

It’s Valentine Week (no, not Valentines Day – the actual day is usually quite anticlimactic)! But I kinda like the week – the reds and pinks, the idea of celebrating love, sending little notes, and the candy…who doesn’t love candy?!?! I want to find a tradition, to show the special love for my boys on Vday. And I think I may just borrow one from Gail (mom.) She always bought us PJ’s for valentines day. Cute huh? Can you see me getting Jack and DJ a new pair of footy jammies every Feb 14? I wont if I have enough time to start this now….

Anyway , that wasnt why I started this post. I was actually just getting acupuncture (yes, me, needles, voluntarily, but that too is a whole other post,) and during the dim-light portion where you sit still for 20 minutes with needles protruding from your body, I was drifting among memories, and reflecting on this week. This is a big week in my head. 5 years ago yesterday, we found out we were prego with Jack. Oh what an exciting yet terrifying day. And 5 years tomorrow was the funeral service for Lloyd, one of our dearly missed family treasures. And this week, today, is actually the due date for the baby we lost last summer. Wow, the emotions. 5 years, this week. Valentine week – to celebrate love. Cheers cheers!

Did someone say celebrate?!?!?!?! Well lets dance!

So last week I went to a medical doctor for a consultation and physical diagnosis, which eventually I received. But in casual conversation the dr said something, exactly, like this:

“…when my wife blah-blah-blah, and she is just like you, type A personality…”

Wait, WHAT? I didnt come for a psychological analysis, what the hell? And its been eating at me ever since. So I just looked up the definition of Type A. Per Wikipedia:

Type A individuals can be described as impatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about their status, highly competitive, hostile and aggressive, and incapable of relaxation.  They are often high achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about the smallest of delays. Because of these characteristics, Type A individuals are often described as “stress junkies.” Type B individuals, in contrast, are described as patient, relaxed, and easy-going.

Symptoms of Type A Behavior

An intrinsic insecurity or insufficient level of self-esteem, which is considered to be the root cause of the syndrome. This is believed to be covert and therefore less observable.

Time urgency and impatience, which causes irritation and exasperation.

Free floating hostility, which can be triggered by even minor incidents.

Aggressive, hostile, “stress junkie”? Yikes. That sucks. Say it aint so.

We are scheduled to fly American Airlines from San Diego to Boston tomorrow for the big 2008 Harmeling family reunion.

This very morning I saw a big news piece n the today show about the cutbacks airlines are making AGAIN to remain profitable. This follows months of rate hikes and additional fees. I was getting nervous to fly this weekend in fear of the long lines, overbooked flights and unknown fees for food and luggage.

Now we have had a little family tragedy. I wont bother getting into it because its not too relevant, other than to say that we need to push our flights a day.

I called American Airlines to see what we could do, and **ug** how much it will cost us…. between reschedule fees and increased fights (no advance notice,) they want to charge $1521 MORE! Holy cow – I dont have that kinda money after all we have already spent on this trip….

SO I was kind and calm and spoke to a really nice rep (Nelly), who then brought a supervisor into the conversation. I explained what happened and they reduced us to a fair $100 change fee per person. What a humane gesture on American Airlines part. Certainly worthy of sharing this story.
Happy travels!

We’d brutalize the garage and the neighbors’ ears on Wolfstar Court back in our heyday, and even played a gig or two around town. (The bassist got gangrene and nearly lost his hand at one point. That was a setback.) Anyway, Jack and I went down to Uncle Rob’s house in Pt. Loma recently. Uncle Rob was kind enough to allow Jack to abuse the drum kit. Jack rocked it for about 45 minutes straight, quite possibly the longest any single activity has ever kept his attention.

Hopefully the boy has better rhythm and timing than I had…
