The first, from Jack. I was commenting that the nasty carved pumpkins are molding and need to go in the trash.

Jack said, “That’s a good job for daddy. Daddy likes gross stuff, that’s what he is a lawyer.”

A text message from our favorite viking neighbor midwife mom:

“Just drove by your house, Annike shouted ‘I see DJ’s head. Shiny’ Have a good night friend, and may your glow serve as a beacon of happiness to all of us.”

D: what do you like best about school?

Jack: group work, cuz it’s when you learn the most.

D: what is group work? Is is when you do your letters and your addition and subtraction?

Jack: yes, mostly they ask like 20 + 20, 40. And 40 + 40, 80. And they ask 100 + 100, 200. And 200 + 200, 400. And 400 + 400, 800, right?

D: yes. Right. Nice work.

Feeling proud of his upcoming brithday

On Friday, Jack will turn five. Five. Ouch.

This morning Jack says, “I’m not even 5 yet and I totally look like I’m 10. I feel like I am 16.”

Jack finished brushing his teeth and said, “mom, I feel like I’m going to be a teenager soon.”

Ha. I ask what he means by that.

“Well, im already 4 1/2, and then I will be 4 3/4, and then 5, then 5 1/4….”

I was hiding in the hallway evesdropping on Jack and the viking-boy, I am not sure what started it but this is what I heard:

Jack: My dad is not the boss of this house. My mom is, and then Otis.

Sorren: Does he know?

(I dont know if Sorren was referrring to DJ or Otis.)

Vikings among us

We are loving our new viking neighbors. They moved in early August 08, after being transferred from Michigan and house hunting for several months, but our own summer drama distracted us from getting to know them. We call them the vikings because if their ridiculous Nordicness (that’s word, I swear.) First you have the names – Lars, Petra, Annike, Soren, Tova… And then momma Kelly (lacking Nordic name) looks fresh from Sweden.

The name “the Vikings” has really stuck and has become a casual way of referring to any or all of them. Jack is down with it as well. Just last night he was nearly in tears, “why aren’t the vikings coming over to play tonight?” I said, “Did you ask them to?” Jack, “no.” Me, “well duh! go ask them!”

So all this back story to explain one of my most favorite things Jack has said all year (and yes, I know its only January 21st.) We were hanging in the viking back yard while they set up their new ridiculously buffed out, huge, LED lit trampoline. Jack starts pestering Lars.

“Lars, Lars, Lars, excuse me Lars….” pestered Jack.

“yes, Jack?” said Lars

“How do they say ‘hi’ in Michigan?”

hahahahahahahaha

While on the potty Jack tells me that “poop goes down the drains and pipes out to Mars and then to the space. But the red poop goes into volcanoes to make lava, and that’s hot.”
